After more than a month of what was effectively radio silence from the biggest metal band on the planet following the release of “Screaming Suicide,” they’ve dropped the third single from their upcoming album 72 Seasons. As previously teased via TikTok, the song’s “If Darkness Had A Son” and holy shit, it’s fucking great.
Where the previous two tracks had a classic thrash feel to them, this one definitely feels like what would happen if you took their last two albums and mashed it a bit with Load or ReLoad (which is not a bad thing). Even then, it still sounds new and fresh. As expected, it’s a riff smorgasbord thanks to the right hand of James Hetfield. And unlike the last couple tracks, Kirk Hammett’s leads sound good — even if it’s a wah-fest that could probably be found on any album of theirs since the Black Album.
I dunno about you, but this song finally makes me excited to check out the rest of 72 Seasons.
